Student Spotlight: Alysson Shines in Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Stories & Spotlights

At Cascade Virtual Academy, students are building their futures—literally! It certainly was a game changer for Alysson, a 16-year-old sophomore from Salem, Oregon, who is gaining invaluable hands-on experience through the school’s newly launched Pre-Apprenticeship Program. This innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway initiative is not only equipping teens like Alysson with industry-relevant skills but also helping them discover a passion for construction and the joy of hands-on trades.

Discovering Cascade Virtual Academy

Alysson’s educational journey has been anything but traditional. Having moved frequently, she transitioned to Cascade Virtual Academy 3 1/2 years ago to take advantage of the flexibility virtual learning offers. She appreciates how the school allows her to work at her own pace and provides the ability to manage her lessons and schoolwork more efficiently. This year, she took her learning to a new level by joining the Pre-Apprenticeship Program offered in partnership with Central Oregon Community College (COCC).

“I live in Salem, Oregon, so it was quite a drive to Bend (over 2.5 hours), but it was worth it,” Alysson shares. “I gained a lot of knowledge and confidence using the tools, learned new skills, and recommend this pre-apprenticeship class to anybody who is interested or wants to try something new.”

A Hands-On Learning Experience

For Alysson, the highlight of the program has been the hands-on projects like building picture frames and benches, which have fueled her passion for construction and allowed her to learn by doing.

“Mr. Tatum is patient and takes the time to explain. You don’t need anyone to be there — the program helps you work at your own pace while understanding safety and tool usage,” Alysson notes.

The curriculum consists of various modules, such as completing the OSHA 10-hour safety module, First Aid certification, and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) modules. Alysson is currently progressing through her fourth module, with program completion planned well before the end of the school year in May 2025.

What Sets Cascade Virtual Academy’s Career and College Prep Apart?

Cascade Virtual Academy’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program offers a chance for students to connect in person while pursuing a trade. Alysson, who is used to virtual learning, finds the in-person aspect of the program refreshing.

“I really enjoy being social with people,” she says. “Everyone in the class got to know each other, and we still keep in touch!”

The program’s structure — combining online and hands-on learning — is designed to prepare students for real-world careers while maintaining the flexibility of virtual schooling.

Building Dreams & Encouraging Other Students

Alysson’s ultimate goal is to work in construction after completing the program. With her newfound skills and confidence, she’s well on her way.

“This class has taught me so much about building, safety, and using hand tools. I feel prepared for my next steps,” she says.

When asked what advice she would give to other students considering the program, Alysson doesn’t hesitate:

“Give it a try. You’ll gain confidence, learn valuable skills, and meet great people. Plus, you’ll leave with projects you’re proud of and memories to last a lifetime.”

Alysson’s journey is a testament to the power of innovative education programs like Cascade Virtual Academy’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program. By providing students with practical skills, supportive instruction, and real-world connections, Cascade Virtual Academy is shaping the next generation of skilled professionals.
