Teacher Spotlight: Mitch Page – Empowering Multilingual Learners at Cascade Virtual Academy

At Cascade Virtual Academy, dedicated educators like Mitch Page are making a profound impact on students, particularly through the Online English Learner (EL) Program. Since joining Cascade Virtual Academy in 2021 as a Spanish teacher with an English Learner (EL) endorsement, Mitch has been instrumental in expanding and enhancing language learning opportunities for students.
When Mitch started at Cascade Virtual Academy, the English Language program supported 35 students. Today, that number has more than doubled, with 77 active students in 2025. The elementary curriculum, complemented by Nearpod English Language tools, has been particularly effective in fostering language acquisition.
Recognizing a critical gap in reading proficiency among students with conversational English skills, Mitch took proactive steps to integrate reading-focused instruction into his curriculum. His commitment to bridging this gap has enabled students to strengthen their foundational literacy skills alongside their spoken language development.
In 2023, Mitch welcomed a student with no prior English skills and a significant academic gap. Seeking an effective solution to serve this student and other students like them, Mitch reached out to national education experts and successfully advocated for the integration of the Rosetta Stone program at Cascade Virtual Academy.
This program, designed to support asynchronous learning, has since been incorporated into the school schedule, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Students who begin with a proficiency rating of 1 or 2 can use the program to advance to level 3 and beyond, making measurable progress in their English language skills.
Mitch’s commitment to his students goes beyond language instruction. He recognizes and supports students facing significant life challenges, such as young parents or soon-to-be parents. Understanding that some students may need ongoing English Language education, Mitch has taken on additional responsibilities. The English Language program has since grown from serving just three students to an impressive 22.
To foster relevance in learning, he has developed a curriculum that encourages students to learn English through the lens of their own cultures. By integrating articles and writing prompts like “Who I Am,” students can see themselves reflected in their learning materials, making language acquisition more meaningful.
Because many families anticipate the instruction being delivered in their native language, Mitch takes the opportunity to highlight the many resources available that support students in learning English effectively. Through real-time translation technology and responsive teaching strategies, students are empowered to develop their English skills while feeling supported in their linguistic and identities.
Students in the English Language program at Cascade Virtual Academy have access to specialized courses that count as high school elective credits, contributing to graduation requirements. Additionally, the school provides two annual training courses for staff to ensure effective support for emerging bilingual students.
Recognizing the importance of communication, Mitch and his team ensure parents receive information in their native languages, utilizing interpreters and multilingual technology to send updates in the native languages represented.
