From Screens to the Shore: How Cascade Virtual Academy Brings Learning to Life for Oregon Students

Stories & Spotlights

Families think about education choices year-round, not only during observances like National School Choice Week, which takes place each year during the last full week of January. At the heart of those conversations is a simple but important question: What kind of learning environment will truly support my child?

For families seeking a balanced schedule without sacrificing connection, academic rigor, or opportunity, tuition-free online public schools have become an increasingly meaningful option. Cascade Virtual Academy (CVA) offers an education model that blends individualized online learning with real-world experiences that bring education to life.

A Consistent K–12 Pathway

Cascade Virtual Academy serves Oregon students in kindergarten through 12th grade, providing families with the option to remain in one school community over time. Designed with continuity and accessibility in mind, CVA supports students whether they enroll at the beginning of the school year or transition mid-semester.

This consistency helps students build long-term relationships with teachers and staff while benefiting from flexible pacing that adapts as academic goals and personal needs evolve.

A Smooth Transition, Any Time of Year

CVA is structured to help students transition seamlessly, even outside traditional enrollment windows. Oregon-licensed teachers provided instructional materials, and a guided onboarding process helps students step into coursework with confidence and avoid falling behind.

This approach is especially valuable for families navigating moves, changing circumstances, or a desire for a more personalized learning environment that still maintains accountability and structure.

Learning That Happens Everywhere

While instruction happens online, connection does not stop at the screen. CVA intentionally creates opportunities for students to learn together in person through statewide clubs, competitions, and experiential learning events.

Students have participated in educational trips to Crater Lake, seasonal meet-ups across the state, and community events such as the Bend Holiday Parade. The school has also hosted hands-on programs like Pixels & Paper, a college-style art and design experience held on a community college campus that exposes students to creative pathways in real-world settings.

One of the most memorable experiences brought more than 120 CVA students together across six Oregon Coast locations for a Spring Break whale-watching excursion. As gray whales migrated along the coast, students turned a science lesson into a shared learning experience rooted in observation, exploration, and community.

Adaptive Pathways That Grow with Students

In addition to core academics, CVA offers online English learner programs and Career and Technical Education pathways for older students. These options help families find a tuition-free, flexible education model that supports both immediate learning needs and long-term goals, whether students are preparing for college, careers, or a combination of both.

Learning That Extends Beyond the Virtual Classroom

From screens to shorelines, Cascade Virtual Academy shows how online public education can remain flexible while still fostering meaningful connections. By combining individualized learning with intentional in-person experiences, CVA helps Oregon students engage with their education in ways that reach far beyond the virtual classroom.
