Bringing Online Learning to Life: Cascade Virtual Academy Students Unite for an Unforgettable In-Person Experience

Stories & Spotlights

More than 220 students, families, and staff from across Oregon came together for a one-of-a-kind, in-person Open House and Scholastic Book Fair hosted by three virtual schools: Cascade Virtual Academy, Insight School of Oregon – Painted Hills, and Destinations Career Academy of Oregon

Held at the scenic Oregon Garden, the event transformed a traditional outing into a dynamic, hands-on learning experience designed to strengthen community connections for students who typically learn online.

The day centered around creating meaningful, memorable school moments, many of which virtual students do not often experience in a traditional sense. A fully staffed Scholastic Book Fair served as a major highlight, generating more than $2,000 in book sales while also supporting teachers with $20 stipends to select new classroom resources.

One of the most talked-about features of the event was a professional-style school photo booth led by staff member, Mr. Nate Quinn. Students had the opportunity to take school photos, an experience that is often absent in virtual learning environments. The booth quickly became a favorite, helping build excitement, confidence, and a strong sense of school pride.

Beyond the book fair and photo experience, families engaged in a variety of interactive learning stations designed to bring education to life:

Students explored Oregon agriculture through the Discovery Dairy Booth, where they made their own ice cream, learned about dairy farming, met local farmers, and participated in the “Track Your Cow” program featuring their own class cows.

Attendees enjoyed a trolley tour of the Oregon Garden, offering a unique way to explore the grounds while connecting with peers and staff. A hands-on seed-planting activity gave students something tangible to take home, extending the learning experience beyond the event.

Younger students stayed actively involved through Activity Bingo, which encouraged participation across stations and kept energy levels high throughout the day. Families also learned about the “Traveling Yeti” summer connection project, designed to keep students engaged and connected during the school break.

“This event was about bringing the virtual school experience into real life,” said Kayla Page, School Engagement Specialist and PTO chair at Cascade Virtual Academy. “For many of our students, this was the first time they experienced a traditional school photo, a book fair, and a shared campus-style event all at once.”

The success of the Open House event reinforced the value of blending online education with in-person opportunities. Building on this momentum, the schools are continuing to expand these in-person experiences to deepen connections and create lasting memories for students and their families. Upcoming opportunities include a hike, participation in the Cultural Fair at Pringle Hall in Salem, Oregon, and Prom, each designed to bring students together beyond the virtual classroom and foster a strong sense of community.
