Adam Waterbury Brings Visionary Leadership to Cascade Virtual Academy
Adam Waterbury, High School Principal at Cascade Virtual Academy (CVA), brings a dynamic blend of experience, innovation, and student-centered leadership to his role. Since joining CVA in November 2025, he has focused on building a strong, connected school community while advancing academic outcomes for students across the state.
Experience Rooted in Impact
With more than a decade in education, including seven years as an Assistant Principal in the South Bronx, New York, Waterbury has worked with diverse student populations in fast-paced, high-impact environments. His time in New York helped shape his ability to lead with both structure and empathy, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
From Classroom to Leadership
Mr. Waterbury began his career as a biology teacher, where he developed a passion for connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications. That foundation continues to influence his leadership style today, as he prioritizes meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for life beyond the classroom. At CVA, he encourages both students and staff to think creatively, approach challenges strategically, and remain focused on long-term growth.
Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
Now based in the Portland, Oregon area, Waterbury is equally dedicated to building connections beyond the virtual classroom. He and his family have embraced the Pacific Northwest, attending local events and exploring educational and cultural experiences throughout the region. Whether it is a Portland Trail Blazers game, a hands-on visit to Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)’s submarine exhibit, or a University of Oregon football playoff game, these experiences reflect his belief in the value of learning both inside and outside of school.
Creativity and Connection Through Personal Passions
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Mr. Waterbury enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and pursuing his passion for LEGO building. This creative outlet mirrors his approach to education, grounded in problem-solving, imagination, and the idea that building something meaningful takes both vision and persistence. He has even brought this interest into the school community, using it as a way to connect with students and encourage hands-on engagement.
Through his leadership, Mr. Waterbury continues to shape a forward-thinking environment at CVA, where students are empowered to discover their strengths, stay engaged in their learning, and build pathways toward a successful future.
