Virtual Learning, Real Success: Aroha’s Passion for Swimming and STEM

Aroha, a ninth-grade student at Cascade Virtual Academy, has been thriving in both academics and athletics. A competitive swimmer with aspirations of becoming an NCAA athlete, Aroha has been with the school since sixth grade, after initially discovering it during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her mother and learning coach, Krystal, sought a more consistent educational experience, and Aroha quickly realized that online learning was the right fit for her. When given the choice to continue with virtual learning through middle school and into high school, Aroha confidently chose to stay at Cascade Virtual Academy.

One of the biggest benefits of attending Cascade has been the flexibility to balance her rigorous schedule. With four hours of training each day, the adaptable structure has allowed her to pursue her passion without sacrificing her education.
Academically, Aroha has experienced remarkable growth. With support and encouragement, she has overcome reading challenges and built greater confidence in her abilities. She credits Cascade Virtual Academy with helping her strengthen her skills and develop more independence in her learning journey.
One of her favorite aspects of school is the interactive science projects. “I like doing the projects that we do in science,” she said. “K12 sends you this big kit with all kinds of stuff. There are labs and books! There are test tubes, containers, clay, thermometers, weights, and scales,” she added.

Aroha’s swimming journey began at age seven when she took lessons simply to learn how to swim. In just two months, she advanced to the top level and was invited to join a summer league team. Excelling in competitions, she transitioned to a USA League Team in 2021, which competes at a high level, with opportunities to qualify for the Olympics; something she hopes to accomplish someday. Her favorite events are the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle sprints. As a freshman, she made the varsity high school swim team and placed 9th overall in the 50 freestyle and 10th overall in the 100 freestyle at districts.
Beyond swimming, Aroha has a deep passion for STEM and engineering. She dreams of attending Stanford University to continue both her education and her swimming career. “One thing I really like about my school is when I have swim meets far away, I can continue to do schoolwork,” she shared.

Aroha and her family also enjoy engaging with the Cascade Virtual Academy community. “We try to go to almost all the in-person events that we can,” said her learning coach, Krystal. The supportive and positive online school environment has played a crucial role in Aroha’s success. “The online school community is so positive,” Krystal added.
With a bright future ahead, Aroha is a shining example of how online learning can empower students to achieve their goals both inside and outside the classroom. Cascade Virtual Academy is proud to support her journey and can’t wait to see all she accomplishes next!
